MIPM on the way to revolutionizing the ECG

The MIPM Mammendorfer Institute for Physics and Medicine GmbH (MIPM) has been working with the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU) for many years to promote further innovation in medical technology.

In the current cooperation with OVGU, MIPM is developing new ways to record ECGs without interference during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations. The latest technologies, algorithms, and materials are being researched to eliminate the disturbances caused by the MRI. The collaboration with highly specialized doctors, physicists, and engineers enables MIPM to develop complex systems under realistic conditions at the local MRI facilities.

For MR-guided interventions, it is necessary to monitor the patient's health status using a diagnostic ECG. However, MR imaging has a significant impact on the ECG signal itself.

In particular, the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect, caused by the static magnetic field of the MRI, makes the ECG signal unusable for diagnostic purposes. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding this joint project under the name "12-Channel ECG for MR-Guided Cardiac Catheter Interventions and Hemodynamic Monitoring (EMERGE)." The goal is a 12-channel ECG that ensures reliable diagnosis even during MRI examinations.

At the start of the collaboration, there was a kick-off meeting last year with the involved partners from the STIMULATE research campus, the University Clinic for Cardiology and Angiology, and MIPM.

In the current COVID-19 situation, digital communication methods have mainly been used so far. Fortunately, both sides have long been equipped with the latest technology. However, it turns out that personal meetings and participation in tests are immensely important for such complex projects. The COVID-19 restrictions significantly hinder the collaboration.

"Despite the significant difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, I look forward to the further progress of the project and the collaboration with all involved," said Michael Bauer, a developer at MIPM. He is one of the leading figures driving the project forward.
